Nylon Wheels for Industrial Use: Why PA6 & PA66 Granules Are the #1 Choice for Wheel Manufacturers in India

Plastic wheels and casters are a cornerstone of material handling, logistics automation, and industrial equipment. From warehouse trolleys and hospital furniture to conveyor systems and heavy-load dollies, the performance of a plastic wheel is entirely determined by the quality of the polymer granules used during injection molding.

In India, the industrial wheel manufacturing sector has witnessed explosive growth driven by e-commerce warehousing, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and pharmaceutical material handling. At the center of this growth is one polymer: Nylon.

This guide by Jay Plast — a leading polymer granule supplier in Mumbai — explains why PA6 and PA66 Nylon is the dominant raw material for wheel and caster manufacturers, and what grades to specify for different load requirements.

1. Why Nylon (Polyamide) Outperforms Other Polymers for Wheels

When selecting a plastic for wheels, engineers evaluate four critical performance parameters:

Performance ParameterNylon PA6/PA66Polypropylene (PP)ABS
Load Bearing CapacityVery HighModerateLow
Abrasion & Wear ResistanceExceptionalFairPoor
Coefficient of FrictionLow (self-lubricating)ModerateHigh
Operating TemperatureUp to 100°C continuous60°C–70°C70°C–80°C
Impact ResistanceHighGoodGood
Chemical ResistanceHigh (oils, greases)Very HighFair

Nylon dominates because:

  • Its semi-crystalline structure creates a dense, hard-wearing surface that resists groove formation from floor debris.
  • Low coefficient of friction means nylon wheels roll easily, reducing push-pull effort on trolleys by up to 35% compared to PP wheels of equivalent diameter.
  • Excellent fatigue resistance under cyclic loading — essential for wheels that travel millions of revolutions in warehouse applications.

2. PA6 vs. PA66 for Wheel Manufacturing: Which Grade to Use?

Polyamide 6 (PA6) Granules for Wheels:

  • Lower melting point (~220°C): Easier processing in standard injection molding machines with lower barrel wear.
  • Higher toughness at low temperature: PA6 maintains ductility better at sub-zero temperatures (ideal for cold storage warehouse wheels).
  • Better impact absorption: Slightly more rubber-like after conditioning with ambient moisture, reducing impact shock on rough industrial floors.
  • Cost: More economical than PA66. Recommended for light to medium duty wheels (up to 200 kg per wheel load).

Polyamide 66 (PA66) Granules for Wheels:

  • Higher melting point (~260°C): Translates into a higher heat deflection temperature — critical for wheels operating near furnaces, kilns, or in heated factory floors.
  • Superior rigidity and creep resistance: PA66 deforms less under sustained static loads, maintaining round geometry over time — eliminating the flat-spot failure common in low-grade polymer wheels.
  • Recommended for: Heavy-duty industrial casters (300 kg–1,000 kg+ per wheel), automotive assembly line skids, and aerospace component trolleys.

3. Glass Fiber Reinforced Nylon for High-Load Wheels

For wheels carrying extreme loads exceeding 500 kg, compounders and wheel manufacturers specify PA6 GF15 or PA66 GF30 (glass fiber reinforced grades):

  • PA6 GF15 (15% Glass Fiber): Balanced toughness and stiffness. Ideal for industrial trolley wheels where some floor-shock absorption is desired.
  • PA66 GF30 (30% Glass Fiber): Maximum rigidity. Used for AGV drive wheels, heavy forklift attachment rollers, and industrial conveyor pully wheels where dimensional stability under load is critical.

Note: GF-reinforced wheels have a harder surface and may mark delicate flooring. Specify unreinforced PA6 for use on epoxy-coated or resin floors.

4. Processing Guidelines for Molding Nylon Wheels

Injection molding nylon wheels requires attention to drying and thermal control:

  1. Mandatory Desiccant Drying: PA6 and PA66 are hygroscopic. Pre-dry granules at 80°C–90°C for 4–6 hours. Moisture exceeding 0.10% will cause:

    • Severe silver streaking across the wheel hub face.
    • Hydrolytic degradation reducing final tensile strength by up to 30%.
    • Micro-voids in thick wheel rims, causing premature fatigue cracking.
  2. Melt Temperature Range: Maintain barrel at 250°C–270°C for PA6 and 260°C–285°C for PA66. Avoid extended barrel residence times.

  3. Gate Location: Center-gate designs at the wheel hub core provide balanced radial flow, minimizing weld lines on the wheel's rolling surface.

  4. Mold Temperature: Keep mold at 60°C–80°C to allow controlled crystallization and optimal surface hardness in the wheel tread area.
