POM (Delrin) Precision Wheels & Guide Rollers: Why Polyacetal Is the Engineer's First Choice for Low-Noise, High-Speed Rolling Applications
In precision mechanical systems where silence, smoothness, and dimensional accuracy are non-negotiable, POM (Polyoxymethylene) — commercially known as Delrin® (DuPont) or Hostaform® (Celanese) — stands alone as the premier thermoplastic for wheels and rollers.
From drawer slide rollers and sliding door wheels to timing belt guide rollers, conveyor track wheels, and precision bearing cages, POM's combination of stiffness, low friction, and dimensional stability makes it irreplaceable in high-precision wheel applications.
In this technical guide, Jay Plast explains the engineering advantages of POM for wheel and roller manufacturing, the critical differences between homopolymer and copolymer POM grades, and the processing parameters for defect-free molding.
1. Why POM Is the Gold Standard for Precision Rolling Components
Mechanical Superiority Over Other Plastics for Rollers:
| Property | POM (Acetal) | Nylon PA6 | Polypropylene |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coefficient of Friction (dry) | 0.20–0.35 | 0.30–0.45 | 0.35–0.50 |
| Dimensional Stability | Excellent (0.1–0.2% water absorption) | Good (absorbs 2–3% water, swells) | Excellent (absorbs <0.01%) |
| Fatigue Resistance (cyclic) | Outstanding | Good | Moderate |
| Creep Resistance (sustained load) | Very High | Moderate | Low |
| Surface Hardness (Rockwell R) | R120 | R90–R110 | R80–R95 |
The decisive advantages of POM for wheels:
- Virtually no moisture absorption: Unlike Nylon, POM does not swell in humid environments. A POM wheel bore molded to 10.00mm will remain within ±0.05mm even after years of service in high-humidity warehouses or outdoor applications.
- Self-lubricating surface: POM's crystalline surface structure provides inherently low sliding friction without external grease — critical for maintenance-free rolling applications.
- High fatigue strength: POM withstands millions of cyclic load repetitions without crack initiation — ideal for conveyor roller wheels that operate 24/7 in automated production lines.
2. POM Homopolymer vs. POM Copolymer for Wheel Applications
POM Homopolymer (e.g., Delrin® by DuPont):
- Higher crystallinity: Produces maximum surface hardness, stiffness, and wear resistance.
- Best for: High-precision guide wheels, timing belt idlers, drawer slide rollers, and gear-tooth wheels.
- Limitation: Slightly more sensitive to hydrolysis in hot water (above 60°C) and alkaline environments. Avoid in chemical washdown environments.
POM Copolymer (e.g., Hostaform® / Duracon®):
- Better thermal stability: Resists degradation at elevated temperatures better than homopolymer. Recommended when parts may experience occasional temperature excursions above 100°C.
- Higher chemical resistance: Better in alkaline cleaning environments and wet food-processing applications.
- Better for: Conveyor rollers in food-processing plants, sliding wheels in dishwasher racks, and rollers in agricultural equipment.
3. Key Applications: Where POM Wheels Are Specified
A. Drawer Slide & Sliding Door Rollers
- Requires exceptionally smooth rolling with zero stick-slip vibration.
- POM produces whisper-quiet operation versus PP or Nylon alternatives.
- Dimensional precision is critical: bore diameter tolerances must remain stable across temperature and humidity cycling in kitchens and bathrooms.
B. Conveyor Track Guide Wheels
- POM guide wheels on aluminum conveyor extrusion tracks (e.g., Bosch Rexroth V-slot systems) must maintain precise V-groove geometry under continuous running loads.
- High creep resistance prevents groove widening under sustained lateral loads.
C. Timing Belt Idler & Tensioner Rollers
- POM's stiffness ensures minimal belt slip and accurate tension maintenance.
- Self-lubricating surface eliminates belt-edge wear, extending timing belt service life by 20%–40%.
D. AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) Drive Rollers
- Smooth rolling with high load-bearing capacity reduces motor power draw.
- Excellent fatigue resistance handles repeated high-frequency stop-start cycles typical in AGV navigation.
4. Processing Guidelines for Injection Molding POM Wheels
Critical Warning: POM is thermally sensitive. Overheating causes depolymerization and formaldehyde gas generation — hazardous to operators and destructive to the mold and barrel.
-
Drying: POM absorbs very little moisture, but pre-drying at 80°C–90°C for 2–3 hours is still recommended to eliminate surface condensation and ensure streak-free surface finishes on rolling surfaces.
-
Melt Temperature: Maintain barrel between 190°C–215°C (copolymer) or 200°C–220°C (homopolymer). Never exceed 230°C or leave POM melt stationary in the barrel during production pauses.
-
Purging Discipline: Before shutdown, always purge POM out of the barrel with a neutral resin (such as PE or PP). POM left in a hot barrel decomposes into formaldehyde, which is toxic and corrosive.
-
Gate Design: Use direct center-pin gates or submarine gates for wheel hubs. Avoid fan gates that create uneven radial flow, which produces weld lines on the rolling surface.
-
Mold Temperature: Set at 60°C–90°C. Higher mold temperatures promote crystallinity, yielding harder surfaces and better dimensional stability in the finished wheel.
5. Reprocessed POM Granules: Quality Considerations
POM regrind must be treated with extreme care:
- Mixed POM regrind (containing both homo- and co-polymer) can destabilize thermal processing windows.
- Contaminated POM scrap often contains residual formaldehyde stabilizers from competing suppliers.
- At Jay Plast, our reprocessed POM granules are sourced exclusively from clean, single-grade post-industrial POM trim scrap, thoroughly tested for MFI consistency before supply.
For precision wheel applications, we always recommend virgin POM grades to guarantee bore diameter tolerances and surface hardness. Reprocessed POM from Jay Plast is suitable for less critical applications such as structural clips and non-precision guides.
