Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN) Granules: The Definitive Guide to High-Clarity, Chemical-Resistant Thermoplastics for Cosmetic Packaging & Appliances

In the world of transparent thermoplastics, manufacturers frequently struggle with a common tradeoff:

  • General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS): Inexpensive and crystal-clear, but extremely brittle with virtually zero chemical or solvent resistance.
  • Acrylic (PMMA): Exceptional optical clarity and UV resistance, but carries a high cost premium and is prone to brittle notch cracking.
  • Polycarbonate (PC): Virtually shatterproof, but expensive, prone to environmental stress crazing when in contact with cosmetic oils or fragrances, and requires high processing temperatures.

For cosmetic packaging, domestic appliance components, water purifiers, and industrial sight glasses, Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN) provides the ideal golden mean.

At Jay Plast, SAN granules are a staple engineering polymer supplied to packaging molders, appliance manufacturers, and houseware brands across India. In this technical guide, we detail the properties, processing conditions, and commercial applications of SAN resin.

1. What is Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN)?

SAN is a rigid, transparent copolymer produced by the copolymerization of Styrene (~70%–80%) and Acrylonitrile (~20%–30%):

  • Styrene Monomer: Imparts high optical transparency (crystal-clear light transmission > 88%), high stiffness, surface gloss, and effortless melt processability.
  • Acrylonitrile Monomer: Imparts polar resistance against oils, fats, alcohols, and household cleaning chemicals, while significantly improving tensile strength, thermal resistance (HDT up to 100°C–105°C), and surface scratch resistance compared to polystyrene.

2. Technical Comparison: SAN vs. GPPS vs. PMMA vs. Polycarbonate

3. High-Value Industry Applications for SAN Granules

A. Cosmetic & Fragrance Packaging (Thick-Wall Molding)

The cosmetic sector requires containers that convey luxury weight and crystal brilliance while resisting chemical attack from essential oils, lipid creams, and alcohol-based perfumes:

  • Thick-Wall Cream Jars & Outer Jars: High refractive index gives molded jars a heavy, sparkling glass-like aesthetic without the shipping weight or fragility of real glass.
  • Lipstick & Mascara Sleeves: Dimensionally stable, resists scratching in purses, and provides clean snap-fit closures.
  • Perfume Caps & Atomizer Housings: Immune to perfume fragrance oils that cause stress-cracking in PC or GPPS.

B. Water Purification & Domestic Appliances

  1. Water Filter Bowls & RO Pre-Filter Housings: High burst-pressure resistance and clarity allow consumers to inspect filter cartridge sediment loading.
  2. Refrigerator Crisper Drawers & Shelves: Resists food fats, dairy greases, and sub-ambient refrigerator temperatures without clouding or warping.
  3. Blender Jars & Food Processor Bowls: High rigidity prevents deformation under blending loads, resists food acid staining (tomatoes, citrus), and survives repeated dishwasher cycles.

C. Industrial & Electrical Applications

  • Battery Casing Jars: High chemical resistance to battery electrolyte acids in industrial stationary backup batteries.
  • Optical Instrument Covers & Dial Faces: Scratch-resistant, high-rigidity protective covers for measurement gauges and electricity meters.

4. Injection Molding Parameters for Flawless SAN Parts

SAN processes easily in standard reciprocating screw injection molding machines. However, for cosmetic and optical parts, precision process control is required to prevent flow marks, splay, and molded-in internal stress:

1. Pre-Drying

While SAN absorbs less water than Nylon or Polycarbonate, moisture levels above 0.05% cause silver streaking and surface hazing:

  • Drying Parameter: Dry in a hot air or desiccant hopper at 75°C to 85°C for 2 to 3 hours.

2. Temperature Settings

  • Barrel Temperature Profile:
    • Rear (Feed): 180°C–200°C
    • Middle: 205°C–225°C
    • Front / Nozzle: 220°C–240°C
    • Melt Temperature: 210°C–240°C (Avoid exceeding 260°C to prevent thermal yellowing).
  • Mold Temperature: 50°C to 75°C.
    • Critical Tip: A warm mold (60°C–70°C) is essential for optical parts. It prevents rapid freeze-off, eliminates surface knit lines, and minimizes residual molded-in stresses that could lead to chemical stress crazing later in service.

3. Injection Speed & Pressure

  • Use multi-stage injection velocity: Start slow through the gate to eliminate jetting, ramp up to fill the main cavity volume, and decelerate right before switchover to pack pressure.
  • For thick-wall cosmetic jars, utilize extended packing pressure with slow cooling cycles to prevent internal vacuum bubbles and sink marks.
